Masterpiece by Alexandra Hoffman – Illustrated by Beatriz Mello

Masterpiece, in my opinion, is a book that belongs in every classroom and home. Seldom do I see books on this subject written with such compassion and sensitivity. I highly recommend it as a required read for all children and educators. Alexandra Hoffman and Beatriz Mello not only created an aesthetically beautiful book, but they tackled a very sensitive and prevalent topic affecting today’s children. The Autism Spectrum and finding ways for inclusivity is something classrooms everywhere must adjust to.

When I first saw this book, I was drawn to its magnificent color. Although, I will admit that I am biased toward anything and any shade of blue. The hues just bring me back to peace, like the oceans and skies. I wonder if that is what the author and illustrator intended? Maybe it is what brings, Samuel peace. This picture book fiction,”Masterpiece is an inclusive story featuring Samuel, a boy on the autism spectrum who sees the world differently than his peers. When Samuel’s teacher asks his class to create a piece of art, it quickly becomes apparent that his beautiful way of looking at the world makes him a true masterpiece!” (Summary from Amazon).

Some of the topics covered in this sweet, sweet story include the diversity and uniqueness of children, embracing gifts and talents, understanding your strengths, looking different and seeing the world differently, and lessons of inclusion, empathy, and understanding. The story opens with, ” Samuel loved blue! He loved it so much that he made his world blue.” One of my favorite quotes is, “Everything is better in blue!” Even Samuel knows that it’s just not blue; it has dimensions, depth, and varied purposes that Samuel can see. If I was giving stars for this book, it would definitely receive 5 from me! Thanks for creating such a lovely book. I can’t wait to add it to my personal collection.
